Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas
There is nothing quite like the Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas Experience. Where else can you hand-feed iconic Australian Wallabies and Kangaroos? Or even find the endangered and rare Southern Cassowary and Lumholtz’s Tree Kangaroo? What about seeing a crocodile feeding show or even swimming with one? Perhaps you want to get your picture with a Koala? For one thing, all of these adventures await you at the Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas.
This award-winning wildlife refuge allows people to interact with Australian animals. Explore the eco-certified park, which has five different areas: Wetlands, Rainforest, Savannah, Nocturnal, and Woodlands. Each area has been designed to look and feel like the animal’s natural habitat. See what you can find!
Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas provides a unique Australian wildlife experience. They are truly dedicated to protecting native animals. The Tropical Animal Rehabilitation Centre also looks after wounded, ill, and orphaned animals. With an on-site care centre, the animals are certainly well looked after.
Wetlands Environment
Many wading birds can be found feeding in the streams. This area displays the fantastic variety of our natural wetlands. This region is home to many bird species, such as the black-necked stork, fruit bats, and koalas. Here you can find ‘The Hut’. This is where most Tours and Presentations start.
Savannah Environment
The Savannah is an area that shows both the inland and coastal areas. Guests can hand-feed the massive Eastern Grey Kangaroo and the little Parma Wallaby. This open space is also home to emus and pelicans. Not to mention the Lumholtz’s Tree Kangaroo! A tree-climbing kangaroo found only in the rainforests of The Wet Tropics!
The Savannah is also home to turtles, frogs, and waterfowl. As well as a range of local bird species. Many native animals also use the area as a nesting site!
The Predator Plank can be found here. The world’s first plank walk across enormous estuarine crocodiles. Keep your eyes peeled for the huge Estuarine crocodile, Babinda. As well as his three lady friends!
Rainforest Environment
Discover the rainforest from the bottom levels to the highest canopy. Home to some of our region’s most colourful animals, such as the gorgeous Eclectus Parrot and the colourful Rainbow Lorikeet.
As you climb the new Licuala Tower, you can see all the different rainforest levels. Cross the sky-high bridge to see the birds fly through the treetops!
Find the endangered Southern Cassowary. With its bright blue neck, red wattles, and strikingly black plumage. This stunning bird is only found in the Wet Tropics and World Heritage-listed Daintree Rainforest in Tropical North Queensland.
Woodlands Environment
The Woodland Habitat allows you to see the colourful birds found in the open woods of northern Australia. Admire unique finches and see woodswallows flying above. Search the undergrowth for the smaller birds, such as the quail and the Northern Bettong.
Nocturnal Habitat
Have you ever thought about what animals do at night? At the Nocturnal Habitat, you can finally see what happens! Explore the night environment, and meet the animals who live there. Because this habitat was designed to look like nature at night. This means that “nighttime” for the animals is when we call it “daytime.” This way, we can see what these animals get up to at night! Take a trip through the Starlight Walk. Here you can get up close and personal with animals! You will see Striped Possums, Bettongs, and Mahogany Gliders.
So, let’s see how many small marsupials you can find! Look for the Spinifex Hopping Mice as well as Feathertail Gliders. Keep your ear’s peeled and listen for the Curlew’s haunting call. It is incredible to see how the rainforest looks at night!
